Seattle Kids Read & Write

Helping kids read and write critically, creatively and effectively

Resources

Ralph Fletcher’s Craft Lessons offers specific, age-appropriate writing mini-lessons in the second edition of his popular book. This is one of my favorite resources; the lessons are easy to understand, effective and engaging.  I also love Fletcher’s Non-Fiction Craft Lessons.

Mosaic of Thought, by Ellin Oliver Keene and Susan Zimmerman, looks at the strategies good readers use to comprehend text. The book examines these strategies and offers a model of how to teach them. This is a great book to help readers dig deeper, analyze text, and think about their thinking. I recently gave a presentation about this book to the faculty at The Evergreen School in Shoreline, WA.

The Poet’s Pen is chock full of terrific activities to get older kids writing poetry. My middle school students loved these fun poetry exercises!
